Reasons for teeth whitening:

- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.

- Teeth with active decay and cavities, and teeth with leaking or broken old fillings SHOULD NOT be whitened prior to restoring them. Whitening those teeth may cause irreversible damage to their nerves. That’s the reason why Dr. Davé recommends a thorough dental exam with X-rays prior to whitening your teeth.
- Porcelain crowns, veneers or white composite fillings don't change shade with whitening. Dr. Davé can discuss different options with you prior to whitening treatment.
- Teeth whitening can cause or increase your teeth sensitivity for a few days after the procedure. This can be easily managed by the use of toothpaste such as Sensodyne.
Frequently Asked Questions
Teeth whitening can be done using a whitening toothpaste, whitening gel in a custom tray fitted to your teeth (at-home whitening) and by using concentrated whitening gel with Laser in a dental clinic (in-office Whitening). All methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Please refer to our whitening section for more details.
Teeth whitening is affected by how much the teeth are exposed to staining food like soy sauce, marinara sauce, coffee, tea, wine, etc. It also depends on the structure of the teeth. Usually, teeth in older adults stain quicker and are difficult to whiten. Lastly, the method used to whiten the teeth also plays a major role. At-home whitening and whitening toothpaste don't penetrate as deep into the teeth as in-office whitening and as a result, they last for a shorter period of time.
Teeth whitening is a generally safe procedure. One of the most common reasons why you shouldn't get teeth whitening is if you have cavities which are not filled or if you have old fillings which are leaking. If the whitening gel penetrates into the nerve of the teeth, it can cause irreversible damage to the teeth. A consultation with a dentist is always recommended before in-home or at-office whitening for this same reason.
If done under the supervision of a dentist and within moderation, teeth whitening is quite safe. If you use too concentrated material too often, it can lead to permanent damage to the nerves of the teeth.
